न्यु हेभन विश्वविद्यालयमा नेपाली विद्यार्थी न्युप्सन केसीको नेतृत्वमा ‘हल्ट प्राइज’ सुरु, उत्तर अमेरिकामै उत्कृष्ट ५ मा स्थान

न्यु हेभन (अमेरिका), २०२५ जुलाई — युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेभनमा अध्ययनरत नेपाली विद्यार्थी न्युप्सन केसीले ‘हल्ट प्राइज’ नामक विश्वप्रसिद्ध विद्यार्थी उद्यमशीलता प्रतिस्पर्धालाई पहिलोपटक विश्वविद्यालयमा स्थापना गर्दै ऐतिहासिक कीर्तिमान कायम गरेका छन्। केसीको नेतृत्वमा सुरु भएको यो कार्यक्रम उत्तर अमेरिकाका शीर्ष ५ र विश्वका शीर्ष ३५ विश्वविद्यालयहरूको सूचीमा पर्न सफल भएको छ।

हल्ट प्राइज के हो?

‘विद्यार्थीहरूका लागि नोबेल पुरस्कार’ भनेर चिनिने हल्ट प्राइज एक विश्वव्यापी प्रतिस्पर्धा हो, जसले विश्वविद्यालय स्तरका विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सामाजिक उद्देश्यसहितको व्यवसायिक योजना बनाउने चुनौती दिन्छ। यो कार्यक्रमले हरेक वर्ष विश्वभरका १०० हजारभन्दा बढी विद्यार्थीलाई सामाजिक समस्या समाधानका लागि नवप्रवर्तनशील स्टार्टअप बनाउने प्रेरणा दिन्छ। विजेता टोलीले १० लाख अमेरिकी डलरको बीउ पूँजी पाउँछ।

नेपालबाट सुरु भएको यात्रा अमेरिका सम्म

न्युप्सन केसीले यो कार्यक्रम सन् २०२० मा काठमाडौंको ब्रिटिश कलेजमा अध्ययन गर्दै गर्दा पहिलोपटक देखेका थिए। सन् २०२४ मा स्नातकोत्तर अध्ययनका लागि युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेभन पुगेपछि उनले त्यहाँ नवप्रवर्तनात्मक विद्यार्थी गतिविधिमा आएको खालीपन महसुस गरे र हल्ट प्राइज कार्यक्रम सुरु गर्ने प्रस्ताव अघि सारे।

केही महिना लामो प्रक्रिया, छनोट, अन्तर्वार्ता र तालिमपछि उनी न्यु हेभन विश्वविद्यालयको पहिलो क्याम्पस डाइरेक्टर नियुक्त भए र शून्यबाट नै कार्यक्रम सुरु गरे।

चुनौती र सफलताको संगालो

पूर्वाधार, टोली वा बजेट केही नभएको अवस्थामा उनले विश्वविद्यालय भित्रै सम्पर्क, डिजाइन, प्रचारप्रसार, व्यवस्थापन र सहकार्यको सम्पूर्ण जिम्मेवारी एक्लै सम्हाले। उनले विभिन्न विभागहरू, विद्यार्थी संघसंस्था र प्रशासनसँग समन्वय गरी हल्टको मोडेललाई क्याम्पस अनुरूप ढालेर अगाडि बढाए। यस क्रममा उनको सहकर्मी रोहन पौडेलले ग्राफिक र प्रविधिमा महत्वपूर्ण साथ दिएका थिए।

उल्लेखनीय परियोजनाहरू र राष्ट्रिय उपस्थिति

यस वर्षको प्रतियोगितामा तीन उल्लेखनीय सामाजिक उद्यम अघि आए:

• StockWave — खाद्य अपशिष्ट न्यून गर्न लजिस्टिक समाधान,

• Sustainawave — पुराना जिन्स कपडालाई ब्याकप्याकमा पुनः प्रयोग गर्ने नवप्रवर्तन,

• SoulSprout — सामुदायिक कृषि प्रयोगशाला, भोकमरी र बेरोजगारी न्यूनीकरणको लक्ष्य।

विजेता टोली Sustainawave सँगै न्युप्सन केसी अमेरिकाको बोस्टनमा आयोजित राष्ट्रिय प्रतियोगितामा विश्वविद्यालयको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्दै सहभागी भए, जहाँ ६० भन्दा बढी विश्वविद्यालयबाट आएका स्टार्टअपहरूबीच आइडिया आदानप्रदान भयो।

ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि र भविष्यको बाटो

यस वर्षको सफलताको आधारमा कार्यक्रमले उत्तर अमेरिकाका शीर्ष ५ र विश्वभरका १२० देशका ३ हजार विश्वविद्यालयमध्ये शीर्ष ३५ भित्र स्थान बनायो। यसले युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेभनमा विद्यार्थी नेतृत्व, नवप्रवर्तन र सामाजिक उद्यमशीलताको नयाँ अध्याय सुरु गरिदिएको छ।

अनुभव र प्रतिबद्धता

न्युप्सन केसीका अनुसार, “मैले सुरुमा कल्पना पनि गरेको थिइनँ कि कुनै योजना वा ढाँचा नहुनुका बाबजुद कार्यक्रम यति ठूलो बन्न सक्छ। यो यात्राले मलाई एउटा कुरा सिकायो — विश्वासको साँचो अर्थ तब हुन्छ, जब त्यसलाई कार्यमा रूपान्तरण गरिन्छ।”

न्युप्सन केसीको संक्षिप्त परिचय

न्युप्सन केसी एक सफ्टवेयर इन्जिनियर र परियोजना प्रबन्धक हुन्। प्रविधि, व्यवस्थापन र रचनात्मकता मिलाएर सामाजिक समस्याको समाधान खोज्ने उनको विशेष रुचि हो। संगीतमा पनि उनी गहिरो रुचि राख्छन्, जुन उनलाई सिर्जनशील र सन्तुलित बनाउँछ।

 एक नेपाली विद्यार्थीको पहलबाट सुरु भएको हल्ट प्राइज कार्यक्रमले युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेभनमा सामाजिक परिवर्तन, नवप्रवर्तन र नेतृत्व विकासको बलियो विरासत स्थापना गरेको छ, जसले भविष्यका पुस्तालाई अझ सशक्त बनाउनेछ।

सन् २०२५ मा स्नातकोत्तर तहमा अध्ययनरत नेपाली विद्यार्थी न्युप्सन केसीले युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेवनमा विश्वप्रसिद्ध ‘हल्ट प्राइज’ प्रतियोगिता सुरु गरे। विद्यार्थीको लागि नोबेल पुरस्कारको रूपमा चिनिने यस प्रतिस्पर्धालाई शून्यबाट सुरु गर्दै उनले यस्तो सामाजिक उद्यमशीलता अभियानको जग बसाए, जसले १२० भन्दा बढी देशका ३ हजारभन्दा धेरै विश्वविद्यालयबीच प्रतिस्पर्धा गर्दै उत्तर अमेरिकामै शीर्ष ५ र विश्वभरि शीर्ष ३५ भित्र स्थान बनाउन सफल भयो।

हल्ट प्राइज: सामाजिक नवप्रवर्तनकर्ताको नयाँ पुस्तालाई सशक्त बनाउने अभियान

हल्ट प्राइज विश्वकै सबैभन्दा ठूलो विद्यार्थी व्यवसायिक प्रतिस्पर्धा हो, जसले विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सामाजिक समस्याहरू समाधान गर्न नवप्रवर्तनशील र प्रभावकारी उद्यम निर्माण गर्न प्रेरित गर्छ।
यो कार्यक्रमले विद्यार्थीहरूलाई आ–आफ्नो विचारलाई वास्तविक परियोजनामा रुपान्तरण गर्न सघाउँछ, जसको विजेता टोलीले १० लाख डलरको बीउ पूँजी (seed funding) प्राप्त गर्छ।

न्यु हेवनमा सुरुवात : पहिलो क्याम्पस निर्देशकको अनुभव

केसीले यो यात्रा नेपालस्थित ब्रिटिश कलेजमा अध्ययनरत रहँदा सन् २०२० मा सुरु गरेका थिए। त्यही अनुभवलाई आधार बनाएर उनले २०२४ मा युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेवनमा स्नातकोत्तर सुरु गर्दा विद्यार्थी नेतृत्व र नवप्रवर्तनको कमी महसुस गरे। त्यसपछि उनले विश्वविद्यालय र हल्ट फाउन्डेसनसँगको सहकार्यमा पहल सुरु गरे। अन्ततः उनी क्याम्पसका पहिलो आधिकारिक हल्ट निर्देशक बनेर यो अभियानको नेतृत्व गर्न सफल भए।

अनेक चुनौतीबीच जग बसाउने कार्य

सुरुवातमा विश्वविद्यालयभित्र कुनै पूर्वाधार, संरचना वा सहभागीता नभएको अवस्थामा उनले हल्ट कार्यक्रमको ढाँचा पुनःअनुकूलन गरे। विश्वविद्यालयका नीतिहरूसँग मिलाएर कार्य अघि बढाए।
साथै, उनले विज्ञापन, डिजिटल डिजाइन, ईमेल प्रणाली, कार्यक्रम व्यवस्थापन, संकाय र विभागहरूसँग समन्वय, र विद्यार्थी समावेशिता बढाउने कार्यक्रमहरू सञ्चालन गरे।

उनको पहललाई विश्वविद्यालयका उपाध्यक्ष डा. माइकल रोसी र एडभान्समेन्ट अफिसका ब्रायन ओटिसले बलियो समर्थन गरे।

उत्कृष्ट विचारहरू, नयाँ उद्यमहरू

यस पहलबाट थुप्रै सामाजिक व्यवसायिक विचारहरू अगाडि आए:

• Stock Wave: खाद्य अपशिष्ट न्यूनीकरण गर्नका लागि नयाँ लजिस्टिक समाधान।

• Sustain wave: प्रयोग गरिएको जिन्स कपडालाई ब्याकप्याकमा रूपान्तरण गर्दै वातावरणमैत्री व्यवसाय।

• Soul Sprout: समुदायमै आधारित खेती प्रणालीको माध्यमबाट भोकमरी र बेरोजगारीको समाधान।

यी परियोजनाहरूले विद्यार्थीहरूका नवप्रवर्तनशील सोच र सामाजिक प्रतिबद्धता प्रस्ट पारे। कार्यक्रमले बिभिन्न शैक्षिक पृष्ठभूमिका विद्यार्थीलाई एउटै मञ्चमा ल्याउन सफल भयो।

राष्ट्रिय र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मान्यता

सन् २०२५ मा केसी Sustainawave टोलीसँगै अमेरिकाको बोस्टनमा आयोजित हल्ट राष्ट्रिय प्रतियोगितामा सहभागी भए। उनीहरूको पहलले त्यहाँ पनि सराहना पायो।
कार्यक्रमले:

• उत्तर अमेरिकामा शीर्ष ५ स्थान

• विश्वभर १२० देशका ३ हजार विश्वविद्यालयहरूमध्ये शीर्ष ३५ भित्र स्थान पायो।

साथै, यो कार्यको मूल्यांकनस्वरूप २०२५ को Global Community Award को लागि नामांकन पनि प्राप्त भयो।

अगाडि हेर्दै

अब आफ्नो स्नातकोत्तर यात्रा पूरा गर्दै क्याम्पस निर्देशकको जिम्मेवारीबाट बिदा लिंदै गर्दा, न्युप्सन केसीले आफ्नो अनुभवलाई यस्तो मूल्यांकन गरेका छन्:

“शुरुवातमा स्पष्ट योजना नभए पनि दृढ संकल्प र निरन्तर प्रयासले ठूलो उपलब्धि सम्भव रहेछ। मैले बुझें—विश्वास मात्र पर्याप्त हुँदैन, त्यसलाई कार्यान्वयन गर्नैपर्छ।”

उनले हल्ट प्राइजलाई एकपटकको कार्यक्रम होइन, दीर्घकालीन नवप्रवर्तन र नेतृत्व विकासको मञ्चका रूपमा देखेका छन्।

व्यक्तिगत परिचय

न्युप्सन केसी एक प्रविधि इन्जिनियर र प्रोजेक्ट म्यानेजर हुन्। संगीतप्रेमी समेत रहेका उनी सामाजिक नवप्रवर्तन र प्रविधिको समायोजनमा विश्वास राख्छन्।
उनको प्रेरणा टेक्नोलोजी, व्यवस्थापन र सिर्जनात्मकताको संगमबाट सामाजिक परिवर्तन ल्याउने सोच हो।

न्युप्सन केसीले युनिभर्सिटी अफ न्यु हेवनको इतिहासमा सामाजिक उद्यमशीलताको एउटा बलियो विरासत सुरु गरेका छन्, जसले आगामी पुस्ताका विद्यार्थीहरूलाई नवप्रवर्तन र नेतृत्वतर्फ अघि बढ्न बाटो खोलिदिएको छ।

Lighting a Legacy: From Campus Director to North American Top 5 — The Hult Prize Journey at the University of New Haven

When I introduced the Hult Prize to the University of New Haven as its first Campus Director, I couldn’t have imagined how far it would go. What began as a personal mission to establish a social impact platform became a recognized global initiative — placing among the Top 5 in North America and Top 35 worldwide, out of over 3,000 universities from more than 120 countries.

The Hult Prize: A Launchpad for Student-Led Social Innovation

Often called the “Nobel Prize for Students,” the Hult Prize is a prestigious international competition that challenges university students to develop innovative, socially-driven business solutions to tackle the world’s most pressing problems.

Held annually, the program draws over 100,000 students from around the globe and awards $1 million in seed funding to the winning team to bring their ideas to life. It empowers the next generation of social entrepreneurs by offering a platform to imagine, test, and build real-world ventures with lasting impact.

Introducing the Hult Prize at the University of New Haven

My journey with the Hult Prize began in 2020, as an undergraduate member of the Organizing Committee at The British College in Nepal. That experience planted the seed.

When I joined the University of New Haven for graduate studies in 2024, I noticed a gap — there was no inclusive innovation platform connecting students across levels and disciplines. Recognizing the power of the Hult Prize, I proposed launching it on our campus.

After going through a selection and onboarding process led by both the Hult Foundation and the university, I was honored to be appointed as the university’s first Campus Director, tasked with building the program from scratch.

Building from the Ground Up

Bringing a decade-old global program into a century-old institution was no easy task. There was no existing structure or support system. I had to learn university procedures, navigate internal systems, and develop a strategy tailored to our campus.

Balancing my graduate coursework, a part-time job as a Student IT Assistant, and the demands of launching a major initiative required intense focus, flexibility, and relentless determination. I received invaluable support from Dr. Michael Rossi, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, whose early endorsement gave me momentum.

From Challenges to Achievements

Launching the Hult Prize meant creating a new ecosystem. I led recruitment, coordinated with departments, designed marketing campaigns, built digital assets, managed logistics, and consistently engaged faculty and stakeholders.

Despite not having a full team or outside sponsors, the work moved forward. With daily effort, we revived student enthusiasm, maintained program visibility, and helped participants prepare for the OnCampus Finale — the stepping stone to national and global levels. Special thanks to Mr. Rohan Poudel, a fellow graduate student, for his outstanding graphic design support.

As the initiative took root, university-wide recognition grew. President Jens Frederiksen and Brian Otis from the Office of Advancement offered their support, helping solidify the Hult Prize as a trusted, long-term platform on campus.

The Impact: Student Ventures and Global Recognition

This wasn’t just about a competition — it was about creating a movement.

The program uncovered promising student-led ventures:

• Stock Wave: a logistics innovation to reduce food waste.

• Sustaina wave: the winning team, which developed sustainable backpacks from recycled denim.

• Soul Sprout: a community farming initiative to combat hunger and unemployment.

What made the program truly unique was its ability to unite students from diverse fields — designers, strategists, technologists — and allow them to apply classroom knowledge to global issues.

Together with Sustain wave, I had the privilege to represent our university at the U.S. National Competition in Boston, where we interacted with 60+ startups from across the country. The experience highlighted just how powerful the Hult platform can be.

That year, our program earned a place among the Top 5 in North America and Top 35 globally, making a strong mark in its very first year.

Looking Ahead

As I now graduate and conclude my time as Campus Director, I reflect on a journey that surpassed all expectations. What started with no blueprint became a campus-wide movement, earned national recognition, and even resulted in a nomination for the 2025 Global Community Award.

More than the accolades, what I cherish most is the chance to contribute meaningfully outside the classroom — to help create a space where innovation and impact can thrive.

From the beginning, I never saw this as a one-time event. My vision was to build a sustainable platform for student leadership and socially driven entrepreneurship — and I believe that legacy has just begun.

The road forward is full of promise. I’m excited to see how future students will carry this mission forward with even more creativity and purpose.

A Personal Note

Through this experience, I learned that action matters more than conviction. Progress often begins in uncertainty, but it’s the willingness to act — and the consistency to keep going — that makes all the difference.

For me, perseverance is not about enduring hardship alone; it’s about staying true to your purpose.

Serving as Campus Director wasn’t just a leadership role — it was a reflection of two identities I hold dear: being a Charger and a changemaker, united by a shared commitment to impact and innovation.
