Gunman at Maryland high school dies after armed school officer intervenes; 2 others injured
A student gunman opened fire Tuesday at a high school in southern Maryland, injuring two students before an armed school resources officer intervened, authorities said.
The gunman was killed, but St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said it was not clear if the
school officer fired the fatal shot.
school officer fired the fatal shot.
The attack began shortly before classes were set to begin at Great Mills High School when the gunman wounded a female student in a hallway and also hit a male student, Cameron said.
A school resources officer arrived at the scene and exchanged shots with the gunman, Cameron said.
“That stopped any further attack or assault or any other student,” Cameron said. Cameron said a school resource officer is assigned to each high school in the county.
The female student was hospitalized in critical condition and the male student was in stable condition, Cameron said.
"This is what we prepare for, this is what we pray we will never have to do," Cameron said. "The notion that this can't happen here is no longer a notion."
The shooting took place a few weeks after school Principal Jake Heibel told parents that school officials had investigated threats of a possible shooting but determined they were "not substantiated."
The school was placed in lockdown immediately following Tuesday's shooting. "There has been a shooting at Great Mills High School," the school district said in a statement on its website. "The school is on lock down (and) the event is contained. The Sheriff's office is on the scene, additional information to follow."
Dozens of law enforcement vehicles surrounded the school on a cold, rainy day. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office confirmed it was on the scene and urged parents to gather at another school, Leonardtown High, to reunite with their children.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said special agents from Baltimore and Hyattsville were en route. Gov. Larry Hogan said State Police were ready to provide support and that his office was monitoring the situation. "Our prayers are with students, school personnel, and first responders," he said.
Great Mills High is a four-year public school with about 1,600 students in a suburban/rural area 65 miles south of Washington, D.C.
The shooting follows one at Parkland, Fla., last month that killed 17 students and faculty and sparked a nationwide discussion over how to make schools safer. High school students across the nation held a walkout last week — Great Mills students among them — to press for safer schools, and marches are scheduled across the nation Saturday.
"We are Here for you, students of Great Mills together we can stop this from ever happening again," tweeted Emma Gonzalez, a survivor of the Florida shooting who has been at the forefront of the student push for safer schools and tighter gun controls.
