“Masaan” is a movie is based on the play with the same name and was written by the late Gopal Prasad Rimal, is a noted poet and playwright who ushered in a new era in Nepali literature by writing prose poems. He also wrote two plays, Masaan is one of these two.  He wrote  this play before the 1951 political change of the autocratic Rana regime.  In this play, he deals with the individual psychology and human feelings, family conflict and intrigue which characterized the Nepali feudal society.  During his time (1918-1975), women were socially and culturally exploited and discriminated.  Their voices were never heard.  By writing this powerful play, Mr. Rimal depicts how a man can deceive and exploit a woman for his petty interest and women are forced to tolerate the resultant injustices in the name of family honor and values.

Here is a brief context on how this play was adapted into the film.  My parents, Hari Prasad Rimal (famous artist, singer and director) and Kalyani Rimal (journalist) established The Rimal Foundation in Nepal three years ago to annually recognize artists, musicians and journalists for their contribution to Nepali culture, education and entertainment by awarding them a financial prize.  Two of the most recent legends recognized for their achievements in their respective fields are Prachand Malla and Krishna Tamrakar.   Mrs. Gopal Prasad Rimal authorized the Rimal Foundation to adapt the play to film--a collaboration between Nir Cinemas (Nir Shah) and Rimal Enterprises (Sanjana--my wife--and me).

The mission of Rimal Enterprises is to promote Nepali literature, culture and society therefore this film is our first foray.  This is not a commercial endeavor; the goal is to provide access to the movie to as many people as are interested so we can re-coup our investments to pay for the cost of making this film and to continue funding other worthwhile productions.  It is a labor of love for the renowned actor and producer Nir Shah for he has spent countless hours turning this play into an artistic film.  The following are the participant actors in this film:

On October 18th, Tuesday, the premiere of one of the highly anticipated movies Masaan took place at QFX Kumari. Directed by widely renowned actor/director Nir Shah, the art movie is based on the story by late Gopal Prasad Rimal’s novel “Masaan”. Rimal, a noted poet and playwright paved way for a new era in Nepali literature. The drama Masaan is also taught in schools in Nepal as well as India.

The film portrays social conflicts and women’s demand for social justice during the Rana regime. The story grows around the very traditional values which might appear obsolete, like a wife getting her husband remarried. It revolves around a woman named Helen, played by Keki Adhikari, who leaves home after the humiliating discovery of her husband Krishna’s (Raj Ballav Koirala) mind-set concerning her. It depicts how a man can deceive, discriminate and exploit a woman for his petty interest and women are forced to tolerate the resultant injustices in the name of family honor and values.  The cast further includes Neeta Dhungana, Subhadra Adhikari, Shyam Rai, Keshav Bhattarai, and Rajaram Poudel.

Masaan has been getting fair reviews from the critics thus far and is expected to do very well once it has been released for the general audience.
